What is Therapy?

Here at Mindcare we can offer different types of support

Counselling: A type of talking therapy that involves a trained therapist listening to you to help you to understand and effectively manage your emotional issues. It may be that you’re feeling upset, low or worried about something and just can’t shake the feeling.  You may feel ‘stuck’ at a point in life, and are unsure of the direction you want to go next.  Perhaps you’re tired of trying to please everyone else and need some time to consider your needs and wellbeing. Or maybe something just doesn’t feel right but you can’t quite figure out what and why that is. Counselling isn’t having someone give you advise or telling you what to do, instead you and your counsellor will work together to process and clarify what is going on for you and give you space to explore this and move forward.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: CBT is a structured therapy that looks at the patterns between our thoughts, feelings and behaviour. It can look at negative thinking patterns, and the core beliefs held around how we see ourselves, others and the world. You might be given homework in between sessions to try out techniques that have been discussed in your sessions, setting goals and thought diaries and challenges.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing: EMDR is a therapy often used for PTSD. The two sides of the brain are stimulated by eye movement while recalling the difficult events experienced while being able to process the trauma in a safe way where you remain in control. You will work through the thoughts and feelings associated with distress to build on feeling less stuck with the traumatic thoughts.
